Pulseband

Overview

As a concept wearable capable of tracking most anything from heart rate and blood pressure to sleep activity and steps, Pulseband is a powerful device. As with most monitoring wearables, software accompanies the band to interpret the data it collects. In this project provided by DESIGNATION Labs, my team was tasked with creating a companion mobile app for the Pulseband.

Exploratory Research
With a device that has extensive measuring capabilities, an accompanying mobile app can go in many different directions. For our team it was important to understand who we were designing for first, then design for them.

Therefore, understanding who we were designing for was step 1.

To begin, proto-personas and research objectives were developed to give direction to our research:

Proto-Personas

At-Risk individuals
Heart Attack Survivors
Caregivers
Athletes
Health-Conscious
Subject Matter Experts

Objectives

User Motivations
Habits & Behaviors
Comfort with Technology
Data Privacy Concerns
Useful Data for Physicians

Synthesis
As a team, we conducted over 15 interviews targeting individuals that fell in our proto-personas population and aimed to discover insights based off of our research objectives.

With the insights we gathered from our research, I was able to create two personas that would be used to drive our design decisions.

Branding
With Marty and Claire in mind the app design had a clear focus. As we brainstormed, some common themes arose:

1) Credible
2) Trustworthy
3) Understandable
4) Simple upfront, with ability to go in-depth if wanted

These themes made us think of our design as a quiet, wise, old doctor who had a breadth of information to be shared if the patient (user) was interested; otherwise, the doctor would just provide the simple essentials. This doctor is monitoring at all times, keeping a watchful eye on their patient’s vitals…

“Like a hawk… no, like a...”

Design Principles
With insights found in our research and synthesis, I created Design Principles that would be consistent with our persona’s needs and the wise owl brand. These principles acted as a crutch for our design decisions.

1) Information is understandable at a glance; in-depth data is provided beyond that if the user would like to view it.

2) Both app layout and content are retainable so that the user can get in and get out of the app quickly, and still remember what they saw.

3) Provide user with longitudinal data enabling them to visualize trends.

Task Flows
To meet the design principles, the app architecture needs to align. Therefore, I created task flows to organize the layout.

Wireframes
The task flows gave me the blueprint to create over 35 wireframe screens. Below is an example of a specific onboarding flow in wireframe form.
